The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

In this touchy subject of bias, prejudice and oppression I thought some comic relief  of the hit 70's series Good Times would show the oppression of a family's trials in a dominant society. The Son J.J. of James and Florida Evans  is arrested ( mistaken identity of a robbery)  they found the criminal ... he is white, yet J.J. is black,

Equity was diminished when police wanted to quickly  blame a black man for a crime that a person of a another race had committed.  My feelings of this incident reminded me when my brother was arrested for another mans crime of breaking into a house. The other man was caught, however this effected my brothers trust or mistrust of the law.  In this case officers of the law could have taken the opportunity to have detailed conversation with staff and citizens about who they were looking before jumping to conclusions. This video speaks volumes. so many men in jail now for crimes that they  did not commit.

  1. This is so true my husband and I or black, and he has been pulled over just because his car looked and his looks matched the suspect they were looking for who broke in to a home in his parents neighborhood. Get this his parents are master degree holders and living in a nice neighborhood where you may think black people don't live. My husband was going to a friends house party at 10pm and the police pulled him over. It happens all the time black men being accused of a crime they may or may not did.

  2. I think it's great that you can find humor in such a touchy subject. I love this show. I do not remember this episode though.

  3. I can remember seeing one of those crime documentaries where a mentally ill person confessed to a violent crime. The young man was Black. We was arrested and held despite his family's demonstration that he was not in the state at the date and time of the crime. Even worse was the eye witness description that the assailant was Caucasian. Unfortunately the young man was held for trial for months awaiting trial until another criminal gave up the bad guy's identity. I hate to imagine how often this happens in real life. Funny in a TV program. Not so funny for real.

  4. Valerie,
It's amazing that this is happening even still today. As much as some of social media I can do without, I'm glad that it is exposing injustices many people have had to deal with regularly. Now its time to put actions, education, and vote where our heart is!

  5. Hi Val
I don't recall that episode of Good Times either...but I can only think of it being tragic when enduring mistaken identity. thanks for sharing.
